The École des Beaux-Arts de Reims was founded in 1748, under the impetus of Louis-Jean Levesque de Pouilly to ‘enlighten industry’. Located in a wing of the current Town Hall, the students studied surrounded by works by Cranach, Dürer, Lebrun, Poussin, Rubens, etc., from the personal collection of its director, Mr Ferrand de Monthelon, which were donated to the City Museum of Fine Arts, created in 1794. Renamed the École Supérieure d'Art et de Design (ÉSAD) in 1992, the current establishment is part of this tradition and continues to attach the same importance to the relationship between art and its social and economic environment.
